The first significant oil strike in Montague County occurred in 1922. According to the August 19, 1922 issue of The Oil Weekly Magazine, “Discovery of a shallow gas field in the upper part of Montague County located less than 60 miles due east of Wichita Falls through two wildcat tests showing a combined initial flow of 35,000,000 cubic feet of dry gas has stirred up the interest of the North Texas oil operators to such an extent that offset acreage changed hands during the past week around $100 per acre, while leases fully two miles from either of the two gassers were sold at prices varying from $25 to $75 per acre.”

Hinton-Maddox-Armstrong #1 Well on February 21, 1921 one minute before blowing, and again at 4:30pm, blowing as a 5,000 bbl-per-day well.

Pennsylvania Oil Man George Williams, backed by Cad McCall, drilled for oil in Montague County intermittently between 1918 and 1922, beginning at Eagle Point (4.5 miles southeast of Nocona).

A wildcat test was completed on February 1, 1918 by the Nocona Oil and Gas Company on the J.E. Lemons farm. It encountered oil sands at the 1600, 1850, and 1970 foot horizons and swabbed at the rate of 20 barrels of oil daily during the early part of the year, with a small quantity of gas with the oil pay.
