THE NORTH FIELD

A3

The Oil Weekly, published weekly by the Gulf Publishing Company, Houston, Texas. Vol XX issues of August 19 and 26, 1922.

“The largest of the two gassers brought in last week was the Petroleum Producers Company’s No. 1 J.W. Maddox, located in the southeast corner of its C.W. Thompson Survey about ten miles north of the town of Nocona. This well was reported several weeks ago showing 3,000,000 cubic feet of gas and some water from five feet of sand picked up at 780 feet. After casing off this production and while drilling ahead with a 12 1/2-inch hole, another gas sand was encountered last week at 840 feet and drilled into 4 feet resulting in a flow of 20,000,000 cubic feet of gas. Operations were immediately suspended pending the arrival of connections.”

“Located approximately 1-1/4 miles to the southeast of the Maddox gasser, The Texas Company’s wildcat test on the J.E. Lemons farm in the southwest corner of the Samuel Little survey, proved that somewhat of a gas field exists in the northern part of the County by making 15,000,000 cubic feet of dry gas from 30 feet of broken sand formation picked up at 735 feet, or about 50 feet shallower than the first gas pay reported by the Maddox well.”

In 1925, only 107,135 barrels of oil were being produced, with 25 or 30 operators drilling as fast as possible in the North Field. By 1926 that amount had increased to nearly two million barrels produced, with over four million barrels produced in 1927.

By 1978 there had been over 2,000 oil wells drilled in the county, producing over 200 million barrels of oil, with production horizons between 800 and 7200 feet in depth.
