'(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right': A Song Born as a Joke

One of the Beastie Boys' most iconic songs began as something far more irreverent than it appeared. According to their own memoir, the Beastie Boys Book, the surviving members explained that '(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party!)' evolved from 'a more traditional rap song into a light-hearted f*** you to their increasingly exasperated producer,' as reported by [Far Out Magazine](https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/how-the-beastie-boys-middle-finger-to-their-producer-went-on-to-sell-over-5000000-copies/). That joke of a song went on to sell over 5 million copies worldwide.

A song written as a rebellious in-joke became a generational anthem, selling over 5 million copies and defining an era of music.
